Bands
- April 29
Connie Jones'
Crescent City Jazz Band
Connie Jones is the trumpet player in
this band. The group also
includes Bob Haves on trombone, Tim Laughlin on clarinet, David
Boeddinghouse on piano, Ed Weiss on string bass and Richard Taylor on
drums. I didn't catch the name of the tenor sax player. They played a
lot of material from Bob Crosby's Bobcats, including Fidgety Feet, High Society, Stomp Mr. Henry Lee and South
Rampart Street Parade. The set was dedicated to Pete Fountain,
who was recovering from heart surgery.
Tim Laughlin
Here is Tim Laughlin as
bandleader, with Connie Jones as his sideman. The group also includes
Tom McDermott on piano, Ronnie Magri drums and Matt Perrine on string
bass. They played
Blues for Faz, Palesteena, Avalon, Si Tu Vois Ma Mere as well as
several other tunes.
Leroy Jones and
New Orleans' Finest
I hadn't seen Leroy Jones at Jazzfest the last couple of times I went.
It was good to have him back, as he's a very talented trumpet player
and bandleader. He performs for Harry Connick, Jr. (which might be why
I hadn't seen him the past few years). Jones plays in a somewhat more
modern style than many of the traditional bands. His set included On
the Sunny Side of the Street, New
Orleans (by Hoagy Carmichael),
Jeepers Creepers, Whoopin' Blues and other pieces.
Craig Klein was Leroy Jones' trombone player.
Nobo Osaka on string
bass, Gerald French on drums. I believe that's Alonzo Bowens on tenor
sax.
Leroy Jones
Young Tuxedo Brass Band
This is another
of the traditional brass bands. Some of the best traditional jazz
musicians in New Orleans are in this group, including Dr. Michael White
on clarinet, Gregg Stafford and Mark Braud on trumpet, Fred Lonzo and
Wendell Eugene on trombone and Lucien Barbarin on tuba. Most of these
guys have been playing together for quite a while - I saw an LP of this
group from sometime in the 70s (I think) where it looked like they were
all fresh out of high school. They were joined by the Lady
Jetsetters Social Aid and Pleasure Club (there are pictures of that
group among the Second Line photos). The Young Tuxedo Brass Band always
performs a demonstration jazz funeral - for this, they performed Over
in the Glory Land, In the
Sweet By and By and Joe
Avery's Piece. They
also
performed Paul Barbarin's Second Line,
Just a Little While to Stay Here
and Panama, among other
numbers.
The group left the stage
and
marched among the audience.
That's Gregg Stafford in
the
lead, with Dr. Michael White behind him.
Banu Gibson and
New Orleans Hot Jazz
Banu Gibson is a singer and all-around
entertainer who lives and works
in New Orleans and performs at Jazzfest every year. She usually has a
guest performer - this year it was the Pfister Sisters (who also did
their own set in Economy Hall on May 6). Her set included There'll Be
Some Changes Made, Muddy Water,
Old Man River, The Way You Look Tonight
and Avalon. Incidentally, the
blond Pfister Sister in the middle is Debbie Davis, who is married to
Matt Perrine (the string bass player in Tim Lauglin's group, above) -
thanks to Hatsjazz (Bruce Mohat) for
this bit of information.
