Lakeview
- Part 3
I don't know whether
this tree was blown over before or after the flooding. It's possible
that the flood softened the soil around the roots, which made it
possible for the whole root system to come out of the ground.
Rescue workers
spray-painted the following on the brick wall: "10-4 #425 1 DOG DOA
BATHROOM".
This house is unsalvageable.
The entire building is bent and warped.
Cars were pushed around
by the floodwaters and ended up in unlikely places. Most of these have
been towed away, but there are still some ruined cars that should be
removed. The impound lots in New Orleans are full, and the city is
storing flooded cars under the elevated freeways.
Not only have the slabs under
these homes tilted, but they have moved laterally. The house on the
left slid into a tree - see how the roof wraps around the trunk?
The sign says, "WE TEAR
DOWN HOUSES".
Someone left an empty
bottle of champagne on a concrete wall of a ruined home. I can only
imagine what happened here. Did the owners come back and find the
unopened bottle and decide to drink it? Did they salvage something
valuable and decide to celebrate? Was drinking the bottle an act of
defiance against nature? Was someone so upset that he decided to get
drunk?
The same house with the
bottle of champagne had these drawings (paintings?) on the wall, made
from mud. I don't know what to make of this - it's the strangest thing
I saw during my stay in New Orleans.
